“We sell them a ton of salt for approximately $10,” Samer said. “They then put it into bags and sell it to shops.” Explaining the production process, Samer said workers first dig a pit before drawing water to flood the area.“We then wait for two or three days. At the end of that period, a layer of salt begins to form,” he said. “We collect the salt in wheelbarrows, weigh it, take it to the loading ramp and place it on the trucks.” Salt production in the desert is seasonal, beginning near the end of winter and continuing until the start of the following winter. Most of the work, however, is carried out during the summer.“When the rain begins, the work stops completely,” Samer said. He added that the laborers work for around five hours a day and receive a daily wage of 5,000 Syrian pounds, equivalent to approximately 1,700 Turkish liras.
