Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) is strengthening its research footprint in the Greater Bay Area with the establishment of its Shenzhen Research Institute, a platform designed to help bridge industry, academia and research and translate research into real-world impact. Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement) of HKMU, says the Institute is positioned to be the University’s strategic base on the Chinese Mainland. The aim of the Institute aligns well with the National 15th Five-Year Plan, which supports Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology hub.“我们一步步付出巨大努力，才为研究所争取到空间，”兼任研究所所长的郭教授指出。“这来之不易。我们下定决心，要把研究所发展成一个充满活力、可持续的研究平台，为社会带来积极影响。”作为这座城市领先的应用科学大学，香港都会大学近年来一直致力于推动研究与发展。自2023年提交其首批由校方支持的研究成果申请以来，香港都会大学已获得或申请了70多项专利。去年，该校达成了首个知识产权许可协议，允许一家总部位于英国（UK）的医疗保健公司进一步开发一种前列腺癌早期检测技术，以用于临床应用。
Earlier, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing emphasised that the University must focus its research efforts on specific strategic areas given its status as a self-financing institution, which came with comparatively limited resources. He called for HKMU research to be application-oriented, with the dual aim of tackling real-world problems and enhancing teaching and learning. HKMU has invested over RMB 32 million to establish the Institute, making it Hong Kong’s first self-financing tertiary institution that has been admitted to the Shenzhen Virtual University Park. The Park, established by the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government as an innovative demonstration base for collaboration among industry, education and research, integrates the resources of established universities, both local and overseas.该研究所的第一期自去年6月起投入运作，并于3月正式开幕，提供670平方米的湿实验室和干实验室空间。第二期和第三期的计划正在进行中，将再增加800平方米的实验室空间。
研究所目前拥有约20名来自大学的首席研究员和研究人员的团队，以及约30名由研究所招聘并驻在那里的研究人员和其他工作人员。
谈到研究重点，郭教授表示，研究所在早期阶段集中在四个主要领域，共有12个项目，包括生物医学生命科学、净零排放和环境技术、量子技术，以及数字制造和艺术科技。
他表示：“这些领域都基于香港都会大学的现有优势。它们都极具应用导向，研究成果有望转化为实际效益。部分团队已与内地伙伴建立合作，实现优势互补。”例如，香港都会大学的红树林生态系统研究人员与深圳大学及广东内伶仃岛-福田国家级自然保护区管理机构有着长期合作。该研究所将以此为基础，致力于组建一支世界级研究团队，专注于红树林和沿海湿地的基础与应用研究。
其他计划包括与长春理工大学中山研究院在光电工程和医疗机器人领域开展联合探索，以及与深圳技术大学在无线通信领域开展合作。该研究院于去年12月在中国内地成功注册为事业单位。
郭教授解释说：“这一身份使研究院能够与全国各地的不同利益相关方接触，包括政府、产业界和高等院校，从而获得研究项目支持和人才招聘方面的支持。”
该研究院正在积极申请内地各类研究拨款和资助，使其研究资金来源多元化。作为起步，它已从深圳市科技创新局获得了首笔约200万元人民币的资助。
郭教授认为，香港都会大学将受益于其内地合作伙伴与本地企业之间的紧密联系，这可以加快研究成果的商业化并造福社会。
