TOKYO -- MUFG Bank will cooperate with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on research into human spaceflight technology, hoping to act as a bridge between the public and private sectors while searching for investment opportunities.

MUFG Bank has established a specialist team dedicated to researching the space industry -- a rare step for a financial institution -- which conducts technology assessments and economic impact studies. It includes aerospace engineering specialists and personnel focused on satellite data usage. The bank also holds patented technology for evaluating real estate collateral using satellite imagery and has invested in nearly 10 space-related companies. It has backed ispace, a Japanese startup aiming to achieve a lunar landing, through an investment fund.

MUFG Bank will use overseas case studies and other methods to identify Japan's technological gaps. Leveraging an extensive corporate client base, it hopes to accelerate JAXA's efforts to collaborate with private companies. The space sector has broad potential economic spillover effects, requiring supporting infrastructure ranging from logistics networks and research facilities to medical services.

The bank is also exploring new space-related investment opportunities, including in drug discovery. Facilities such as the International Space Station, where conditions make it easier to analyze the structure of substances, are attracting attention as potential laboratories for pharmaceutical research.

The global space industry is projected to nearly triple to about 280 trillion yen ($1.76 trillion) by 2035, which would make it comparable to today's pharmaceutical market. In June, Elon Musk's SpaceX went public in what became the largest initial public offering in world history.

Space development is also taking on greater significance in diplomacy and national security. Japan recently launched a public-private dialogue with the European Union on cooperation in satellite networks, while Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni issued a joint statement on creating rules for outer space.

China aims to land astronauts on the moon by 2030 and is working to build a satellite communications network. As the space race heats up, related spending is expected to rise further, potentially creating opportunities to attract more investment capital to Japan.
