Is there still a parliamentary chamber in the city of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank? Or has it already become a relic? Two months ahead of the Palestinian Legislative Council elections, scheduled for November 28 and intended to restart the parliamentary process after 20 years of paralysis, the crumbling building mirrors the state of the institution itself. The ceiling has collapsed under relentless humidity, taking down the illuminated decorations and Arabic calligraphy that once loomed above the president's chair. A layer of gray dust covers the varnish of the desks where silent microphones now sit; employees say the electricity bills have not been paid since 2020, a symbol of the Palestinian Authority running out of steam.

The chamber of the Palestinian Parliament, in Ramallah, September 19, 2026. "It's pointless to spend money on a place that's no longer in use," said Samir Alkhayri, 42, the building's caretaker, as he absentmindedly rattled a ring of rusted keys against his thigh. "But I'll admit it: I can't wait for politics to come alive here again. Our country needs it." Both the guardian and the living memory of these walls, he listed, one by one, the names and seats of the last MPs who sat here. That was back in 2007, a year after the elections that brought Hamas to power and led to several months of clashes with Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah. The isolation and then takeover of the Gaza Strip by the Islamist movement marked the political and institutional split between the two territories, as well as the start of a parliamentary paralysis that would last more than a decade.

In December 2018, the Parliament was officially dissolved. Since then, only a handful of people have set foot on the institution's cracked floors, apart from a few donors interested in getting involved in a renovation project. With support from the United Nations Development Programme, more than 20 partners are reportedly working to restore the building, according to Ibrahim Kreisha, former secretary-general of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
