In a statement heard by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) on Friday, Daniel Mookhey wrote that Sharangan Maheswaran was “surprised” and apologised “a few times” after he said he would refer Maheswaran’s allegations about David Chandler to Icac.

Nassif, in an appearance from his Beirut bedroom, insisted he was “not corrupt” On Friday, the commission heard that Maheswaran, a lawyer to Nassif and Toplace executive, later a Labor councillor, texted Mookhey ahead of a budget estimates hearing in October 2021, at which Chandler would appear.

“Hey mate have you got a moment to speak” he wrote to Mookhey. “I think I have a media story you might want to run with.”In a 2023 statement to the commission read out on Friday, the treasurer, who in 2021 was a member of the opposition in the legislative council, said he agreed to meet Maheswaran at a cafe in the Sydney Eye hospital, neighbouring NSW parliament, the next afternoon. Mookhey is not named as a person of interest in ICAC’s allegations nor accused of any wrongdoing.

He said Maheswaran said Chandler had contacted him in January in that year and said words to the effect of: “Someone from the minister’s office has asked me to call you to see if I can help mediate the [former 2GB host Ray] Hadley matter.”Mookhey wrote that Maheswaran alleged Chandler subsequently “harassed his client by making additional inspections, incorrectly issuing defect notices, and making references to mediations during site visits”, which the client inferred were intended to “pressure them” into ending their dispute with 2GB.

Chandler and Ray Hadley, who are not named as a person of interest in Icac’s allegations, are not accused of any wrongdoing.

After Mookhey asked for the name of his client. He said Maheswaran only said he was “a prominent builder who had had some issues, but was fixing them up”.

In his 2021 referral to the commission, tendered on Friday, Mookhey detailed the allegations raised by a “lawyer”, and the request to question the-then fair trading minister, Kevin Anderson and Chandler at the forthcoming budget estimates.

On Friday, Icac announced that Maheswaran was expected to appear again on Tuesday, in the tenth week of public hearings of Operation Rosny, originally scheduled to last for eight weeks. Icac’s inquiry continues.
