TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said Friday she discussed currency movements with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in an online meeting amid the yen's continued weakness.

The two finance chiefs reaffirmed that an undervalued yen is a problem, Katayama told reporters.

The Japanese minister also said she expects excessive yen selling to ease, suggesting that there may have been some "misunderstanding" in the market and that the trend could reverse.

Bessent has urged Tokyo to take steps to strengthen the yen amid concerns that a weaker yen could fuel inflation in Japan and that rising Japanese government bond yields could drag U.S. Treasury yields higher.
