By Augusta Saraiva Investors signaled plans to put more than $3 billion into Colombia during meetings with government officials in the US this week, Vice President José Manuel Restrepo said.

Several have already explicitly indicated they intend to invest in the country, Restrepo said Friday in an interview on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He didn’t give details on the timing for the potential projects.

The total amount is likely to be much greater, given the appeal of sectors including pharmaceuticals, energy and infrastructure, he added.

“What we’re seeing here today is growing interest in our country,” he said.

President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office last month, is seeking to entice foreign capital with a more business-friendly approach than his predecessor, including plans to revive oil and gas exploration. His government is also preparing spending cuts while pledging not to raise taxes.

Colombia also wants to attract greater investment from companies already operating in the country, Restrepo said. He pointed to Rio Tinto PLC’s copper exploration in Chocó province as an example of the type of investment the government wants to encourage.

After years in which the leftist administration of President Gustavo Petro sought to restrict large-scale mining on environmental grounds, the company now sees “a government that is friendly to mining development,” Restrepo said.

The company didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.

While other South American countries such as Chile and Peru are among the world’s biggest copper producers, Colombia has yet to bring a major new copper mine into production.

De la Espriella is reactivating the nation’s traditional alliance with Washington as it seeks help fighting organized crime. The Colombian government has joined President Donald Trump’s Shield of the Americas security coalition, and is in talks about a possible joint military base.

Efforts to help Venezuela recover and move toward democracy will also provide Colombia’s economy with a significant boost, Restrepo said. Venezuela was one of the biggest markets for Colombian exporters before relations soured and its economy collapsed.
