TOKYO -- Sony Group will bring workers at its chip subsidiary back to the office full-time starting next month, becoming the latest Japanese company to roll back remote work policies.

In-office work will become mandatory in principle for the roughly 8,000 employees at Sony Semiconductor Solutions. The change is part of organizational reforms meant to promote research and development efforts in physical AI.

The company will scrap remote work in a bid to improve efficiency and decision-making in joint research that spans divisions, as well as to improve new business creation.

Meanwhile, the company is working to set up more spaces meant to foster casual communication, as well as individual work rooms for focused work. A subsidized lunch and other perks will also be added. The company will still allow remote work for special cases, including childcare and caregiving.

Coordination between divisions is crucial in partnerships with other companies, including Sony's collaboration with TSMC toward mass-production of next-generation image sensors.

In October, the Sony unit will launch a joint business with Mitsubishi Electric to support automation in manufacturing.

"To lead the semiconductor industry by being first on technology, we need to step up our speed and creativity," said Shinji Sashida, Sony Semiconductor's president and CEO.

More companies are bringing employees back to the office. In July, internet infrastructure provider GMO Internet Group stopped promoting remote work.

GMO Internet Group

"Overall, remote work is a detriment," said Masatoshi Kumagai, group CEO and chairman.

Last year, construction group Obayashi scrapped its target rate for remote work and effectively resumed on-site work as the norm. The company said it makes communication easier.

A survey by Persol Research and Consulting showed that in 2026, 24.6% of respondents said their employer requires in-person work as a general rule, a 1.8 percentage point rise from the previous year. Meanwhile, as of July, the ratio of companies using remote work fell 1.1 percentage points year-on-year to 21.4%, declining for the second year in a row.

"Job-based employment is still not well-established in Japan," said Yuji Kobayashi, Persol's principal researcher. "Many companies see having employees come into the office as more efficient because managers can assign tasks while keeping an eye on workloads and employee development." It is unclear whether such moves to bring employees back to the office will bear fruit. Amazon returned to in-office work five days a week, citing the need to foster innovation. The policy ultimately led to an outflow of talent, according to U.S. media reports.

More than 80% of respondents to the Persol survey said they want to continue remote work, indicating that return-to-office rules could be a disadvantage in hiring even if accepted by existing employees.
