After three weeks of travelling across China, Bojan Tomic and his wife found that one of the biggest conveniences of the trip was being able to pay for daily expenses almost entirely via smartphone. The Croatian couple’s journey spanned the cities of Beijing, Xian, Chengdu and finally Shenzhen.

Visiting China for the first time, they quickly adapted to the country’s dominant mobile payment ecosystem, using Alipay and WeChat Pay, two of China’s largest payment platforms, for most of their spending. Both apps can be set up with an email address and linked to a foreign bank card.

“It’s super easy,” Tomic said. “At first, I didn’t know where to press [in the apps], but now I’ve got used to it. It’s so convenient because I don’t need to carry my wallet or any cash.” As China prepares to host the Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen in November, connecting China’s payment ecosystem with overseas networks has become part of broader efforts to make the country more accessible to overseas visitors.

For years, foreigners have complained about the difficulty of making simple, everyday payments in China’s largely cashless society. And economists have long argued that expanding links between domestic and overseas payment systems could boost visitor spending by reducing barriers to consumption.

“Payment connectivity could not only improve the experience for overseas visitors, but also help transform China’s mobile-payment ecosystem into a consumer network that global users can access with fewer barriers,” according to an article posted to social media on Tuesday whose authors include Xu Qiyuan, deputy director of the Institute of American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Survey findings released by the Payment and Clearing Association of China in August showed that 88.5 per cent of respondents used mobile payments daily in 2025, up 5.6 percentage points from a year earlier.

Better links between domestic and overseas payment systems could encourage visitors to make more everyday purchases beyond essential spending, helping unlock more inbound tourism consumption, Xu’s article said.

On Thursday, UnionPay said in a press release that foreign travellers using more than 200 overseas digital wallets across 37 countries and regions could directly scan UnionPay QR codes for payments in China, as part of its efforts to improve payment convenience for foreign visitors ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting.

Users of more than 50 overseas e-wallets, including South Korea’s Kakao Pay and Thailand’s TrueMoney, can use Alipay+, Ant International’s wallet gateway, to make payments in China, the company told the South China Morning Post.

Ant International is the overseas affiliate of Chinese fintech giant Ant Group, an affiliate of Alibaba Group Holding, owner of the SCMP.

Meanwhile, Tencent Holdings launched TenPayGo on Thursday, a mobile-payment app designed for overseas visitors that allows them to pay in China by linking credit cards or digital wallets from their home countries. Tencent’s move follows its partnership with PayPal earlier this year, which enabled US users to pay WeChat Pay merchants in China directly through the PayPal app.

Over the first seven months of the year, spending by overseas visitors in China reached 263.6 billion yuan (US$39.3 billion), up 27.8 per cent, year on year, official data showed.

However, Xu said that partnerships between retail-payment apps alone cannot achieve broader payment connectivity. Moving beyond individual collaborations would require stronger underlying infrastructure, he wrote in the Tuesday article.

“There should be continued improvements to systems such as the Cross-border Interbank Payment System (CIPS) to enhance the capacity, stability and coverage of cross-border yuan settlements, supporting broader uses including trade, services consumption and cross-border e-commerce,” he said.
