He said that there were "pressures" in the global car market, but added: "We're working hard in relation to Europe to make sure that any changes that come through there don't negatively impact on the British car industry." The UK is seeking to work with the EU over proposed "Made in Europe" rules which are intended to protect European manufacturers from global competition. Burnham has warned that excluding British companies would damage supply chains.

In an open letter, JLR suppliers said the British automotive supply chain was "in the wrong market", calling for help to move automotive businesses into aerospace and defence.
