By Thomas Escritt Hungary’s wealthiest individuals may face an asset levy higher than the 1% already floated under a wealth tax the government wants to have in place by January, Prime Minister Peter Magyar said.

Magyar’s government is under pressure to cut the budget deficit by 2030 from a possible 7.5% of gross domestic product this year to the 3% level needed to join the euro area, while promising to preserve many social benefits introduced as pre-election measures by the previous government.

Magyar’s party has announced plans for a tax of 1% on fortunes of more than 1 billion forints ($3.1 million) — and the very wealthy may have to pay more, the premier said Saturday.

Very few of Hungary’s 10 million people have wealth on this scale. Of those who do, some allegedly achieved it through their closeness to Magyar’s predecessor former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who was accused of enriching his associates during 16 years in power — an allegation he denies.

Blikk published what it said were details of the planned wealth tax, which it said would be levied on bank accounts, securities, company holdings and real estate both in Hungary and abroad. Foreign citizens would not be taxed on their holdings abroad, the newspaper reported.

Prosecutors have since brought charges against two former ministers accused of self-enrichment and against a businessman with ties to Orban’s family.
