Sacha Zala, a history professor at the University of Bern and president of the International Committee of Historical Sciences, draws on Swiss diplomatic archives in his research. His work traces the stages and contradictions of Swiss sovereigntism and the particularities that have shaped it: Switzerland belongs to neither the European Union nor the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), but has gradually deepened its ties with both.

On Sunday, September 27, Swiss citizens will vote on the popular initiative "Safeguard Neutrality," launched by the sovereigntist group Pro Suisse and the far-right Swiss People's Party (SVP).

What does this vote mean? Switzerland has long been neutral. How could it become even more so?
