US contract chipmaker GlobalFoundries sees robust demand for Chinese optical modules amid the data centre construction boom, as the firm expands its presence in China to better serve its domestic clients.
Shankaran Janardhanan, senior vice-president of the firm’s photonics and radio frequency division, told the South China Morning Post in an interview that demand in the optical networking module segment was “strong”.
The surging appetite for Chinese optical modules – used to transmit data in high-performance data centres – had partly driven the company’s decision to bet heavily on photonics, Janardhanan said at the company’s recent annual tech summit in Shanghai.
Chinese optical module makers were now shipping heavily to US hyperscalers as data standards transition rapidly from 100 to 200 gigabits per second per lane, he added.
That is opening up new opportunities for GlobalFoundries, which makes speciality semiconductors for data centres, cars and other systems, to carve out a niche serving these Chinese optical module producers.
US hyperscalers including Microsoft, Amazon and Meta Platforms, as well as Chinese tech giants like Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings, are all pushing forward optical connectivity to scale their AI data centres.
AI chipmaker Nvidia is also working to develop the ecosystem, integrating silicon photonics into its architectures to overcome traditional electrical bandwidth limits. Alibaba owns the SCMP.
While the industry debates whether pluggable modules, near-packaged optics (NPO) or co-packaged optics (CPO) will become the dominant data centre standard, Janardhanan said the major barrier to optical connectivity lay on the manufacturing side.
“Whether it’s pluggables, NPO or CPO, being able to manufacture and test optics at scale is the key challenge,” he said.
The company has launched solutions in silicon photonics and advanced packaging to address the bottleneck. One of the key products is its silicon photonics co-packaged advanced light engine – or “Scale” – which is designed to enable the mass production of the complex components and to support advanced optical connectivity roll out.
The firm has operated in China for 12 years and already has deep ties in the country’s automotive industry. Now it is further expanding its Chinese manufacturing footprint as it looks to better serve its domestic clients.
Earlier this month, it opened a new office in Guangzhou to deepen a manufacturing partnership with local foundry Zen Semi, focusing on 40-nanometre automotive chips.
The deal aimed to transfer technological know-how and build manufacturing capability locally to serve the domestic auto market, Janardhanan said, adding the company would decide on a case-by-case basis whether to pursue further expansion plans.
“The partnership provides proof that the model can work,” he said. “We selected a market and technology that China needed, and we will continue to assess opportunities as the market evolves.” He stressed that regionalisation must be balanced with global supply chain resilience.
“In the semiconductor industry, I don’t think there is any single region that is able to independently cover the entire value chain,” he said, highlighting the company’s manufacturing facilities spread across the United States, Europe and Asia as a core competitive advantage.
Victor Hu, GlobalFoundries’ China president, echoed this during a media briefing, noting that the new Guangzhou office aimed to “further pull manufacturing capabilities closer to clients”.
Looking beyond the data centre boom, Janardhanan said that physical AI – a sector that includes humanoid robotics, autonomous vehicles and smart devices – could soon become a very large market.
“China is moving very fast in real-world physical AI deployment,” Janardhanan said. “We are combining our semiconductor technologies with processor IP and software capabilities to evolve into a more holistic technology partner as this ecosystem rapidly unfolds.”
