When organizers of the Sundance Film Festival announced that it will be moving from its decadeslong home of Park City, Utah, to Boulder, Colo., next year, the choice of location likely came as a surprise to some.

About 30 miles from Denver, Boulder is mostly known by outsiders for two things: the University of Colorado and easy access to the great outdoors. But the small city, which won the festival over other bids, is also home to a community of chefs, artists and entrepreneurs that has long given Boulder a creative energy that complements its natural beauty.
