Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva speaks at a press conference during the United Nations Climate Summit (COP30) in Belem, Brazil, on November 19, 2025.

With a broad smile, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva praised the environmental achievements of his third term during a speech on June 10 at the Planalto Presidential Palace in Brasilia. "Brazil has become the country with the most credibility in the world when it comes to environmental stewardship," the 80-year-old president said proudly.

From the moment he took office in January 2023, President Lula established the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, launched numerous operations against illegal gold mining, replenished a fund dedicated to protecting the Amazon, and revived environmental agencies paralyzed under his far-right predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022). Thanks to these efforts, annual deforestation in the Amazon fell from 11,594 square kilometers to 5,731 square kilometers between 2022 and 2025 – a 50% decrease, according to satellite data collected by the National Institute for Space Research.

"The Lula government's legacy is positive for the environmental agenda," said Maiara Folly, the executive director of the CIPO platform, a Brazil-based think tank focused on climate governance. She also welcomed "the central role that environmental issues have played in Brazil's foreign policy." In addition to strengthening cooperation among Amazonian countries, the left-wing president hosted COP30 in Belem, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, in November 2025. Brazil used the summit to champion two international initiatives: the Tropical Forest Forever Facility, a financing mechanism to protect tropical forests that remains underfunded, and a roadmap aiming to phase out fossil fuels.
