Hong Kong marine authorities have launched an investigation after a yacht allegedly sped directly towards a boat rowed by six athletes during a race in Sai Kung over the weekend, in an aggressive act that one participant said was “deliberate”.

The incident came to light on Sunday after one of the rowers, Eddie Lam Yat-ming, an assistant professor at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University’s Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, shared footage of the encounter on social media.

Lam was taking part in the 40km (25-mile) Sai Kung Coastal Challenge near High Island Reservoir on Saturday.

The video he posted showed a yacht passing close to his boat at top speed in a near collision that caused the boat to rock violently in its wake.

“The yacht suddenly accelerated from about 100 metres away, pointed directly at us and dashed towards us … Locking onto a target from 100 metres away does not look like a mistake; it is a deliberate act,” Lam wrote. “Perhaps the captain thought it was fun and exciting, but this could have cost several lives. The sea is not your speedboat racetrack; please respect the safety of other athletes.” Responding to questions from the South China Morning Post, a Marine Department spokeswoman said on Monday that it had not received any reports about the incident but would nonetheless start an investigation.

She added that the department would take appropriate action if there had been any breach of the law.
