By Anna Irrera Citigroup Inc. is partnering with Coinbase Global Inc. to allow the bank’s institutional clients to accept stablecoin payments, as large financial institutions step up their involvement in new forms of digital money.

Merchants using Spring by Citi — the bank’s payment acceptance business — will be able to take stablecoins at checkout through an integration with Coinbase Payments, the companies said in a statement on Monday. The digital tokens will be automatically converted into fiat, with Citi settling the funds as the bank of record, meaning merchants won’t have to hold or mange crypto themselves.

The move expands on a partnership between Citi and Coinbase which was first announced last year when the companies said would join forces to develop digital asset payment capabilities for institutional clients. Under the latest plans, Coinbase will also use Citi’s virtual account wallet infrastructure to offer its payments customers bank-account-like services such as accepting, holding and paying funds. Incoming fiat payments will be automatically converted to stablecoins.
