By Antonia Mufarech Chile President José Antonio Kast unveiled measures on Monday to combat the nation’s highest unemployment rate in five years, as a weak labor market and sluggish economy dent his administration’s support.
The plan will mobilize 1.3 trillion pesos ($1.34 billion) in the short term through investment, public works and employment subsidies, and it will create about 100,000 jobs, Kast said at an event at the presidential palace. The policies will take effect in coming months, with their impact extending through 2027.
Job creation is “one of the biggest pains we all face,” Kast said. “We know we need to move quickly. People can’t keep waiting for job opportunities.”Kast is coming under fire as his government struggles to fulfill its central promise of jolting one of Latin America’s richest economies. Since he took office in March, growth has withered, confidence levels have fallen and unemployment has jumped, with female job seekers notably worse off. Polls show the president’s approval has tumbled to the lowest point of his administration.
More broadly, Chile stands out from its Latin American peers like Colombia, Brazil and Mexico because its unemployment rate remains well above pre-pandemic levels. The country’s joblessness hit 9.5% in the three months through July, above the 7.8% recorded in February, 2020.
The plan, dubbed “Chile Takes Off” will allocate 91 billion pesos to employment subsidies between 2026 and 2027, with most directed to women and young people, Kast said.
As part of the initiative, the government will also inject 800 billion pesos for projects such as infrastructure that can be implemented quickly, he said.
Concerns over jobs are increasingly dominating the public agenda. According to a Cadem poll published Sept. 13, 79% of respondents said the government should devote greater effort to the economy and employment. That figure was well above security, crime and drug trafficking at 33%.
Kast’s approval rating at the end of September slumped to 35%, according to a separate Cadem poll published on Sept. 27.
In July, Kast announced a 50 billion-peso package aimed at creating 50,000 jobs within four months. It included 20,000 new hiring subsidies administered by Sence, the government’s employment and job-training agency.
