Sri Lanka on Monday called for the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza, reiterating its support for Palestinians' "inalienable" rights and a two-state solution.

"Recovery and reconstruction of Gaza must be an early priority," Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said in an address to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

"We are pained by the developments in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories. We fully support the inalienable rights of Palestinians, including their right to self-determination," Herath said.

He added that Colombo supports resolving the Palestine issue in line with the 1967 border formula.

"We stand in solidarity with the international community in calling for an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, existing side by side with Israel, in peace, within the pre-1967 borders," he said.

Welcoming a UN Security Council resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza, Herath urged "all parties" to uphold it.

Expressing concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, Herath said dialogue is the "only viable" way forward.

He also highlighted climate change-driven disasters across the globe in recent years, particularly in South Asia.

Herath said underdeveloped countries, which have the "least" share in global emissions, are paying the price for the growing phenomenon.
