Yet, that day, in Turin, in the magnificent hall of the Circolo dei Lettori, I felt overcome by an immense sadness. The man interviewing me mentioned an article I had written in 2015, just after the Bataclan terrorist attacks, in which I expressed both my hatred of fanaticism and my attachment to European values, to the Enlightenment and to the ideals of equality and emancipation. He asked me: "Would you still write that article today?"

The fanaticism I denounced at the time has taken over everything, and, as [philosopher and writer Emil] Cioran [1911-1995] so rightly wrote, "fanaticism is the death of conversation."

And when I cried, it was out of humiliation, discouraged by having to endure extremely violent discourse daily, as if it were no longer shocking. Here, it is a journalist who asks, disdainfully, "but really, would you want to live in a Muslim country?" while his embarrassed guest replies, "of course not." There, it is a politician who explains that people with a name like mine are not real French people or, at best, "French by branch," leaving no doubt that the French tree could soon be pruned.
