The Department of Veterans Affairs announced new measures on Monday that will require written informed consent by patients before they are prescribed certain psychiatric drugs.

The new policy will require veterans under age 30 to sign consent forms before receiving antidepressants, and it mandates that doctors record made records of discussions about the risks and benefits of the treatments, including how to safely discontinue them.

The guidance also requires a signed consent form when patients are concurrently prescribed opioids and benzodiazepines. The measure will go into effect in 2027.

“America’s veterans should get as much information as possible as they are deciding what treatment is best for them,” said Doug Collins, the secretary of Veterans Affairs, in a statement announcing the changes. “The guidance we’re announcing today will ensure that happens.”The new requirements are far-reaching — the department provides mental health care to nearly 1.7 million veterans. They have a significantly higher suicide rate than the general population and experience high rates of serious mental health challenges like post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.
