JPMorgan Chase, the world’s top bank by market capitalisation, plans to expand hiring and technology investment across mainland China and Hong Kong and is looking to take advantage of the city’s strengthening capital markets as well as its platform for serving companies operating in and out of the Chinese market, according to senior executives.

CEO Jamie Dimon said the banking giant’s China-related business, measured by factors including client volume, has grown sharply over the past decade – and would likely continue to rise at a comparable rate.

The city’s first five-year plan for economic and social development, also unveiled this month, included aspirations to “consolidate and enhance” its status as an international financial centre and close the gap with second-ranked London.

After his Hong Kong visit on Wednesday, Dimon travelled to Washington on Thursday to attend a state dinner for President Xi Jinping at the White House – a globe-trotting itinerary that underscored the bank’s positioning in the realm of US-China commercial relations. He also noted that his bank was bridging business communities between the two countries.

When JPMorgan works with companies in the country, it also helps them expand into international markets – that work, he noted, often takes place outside the region. “A lot of what we do to help those clients doesn’t actually happen here. It happens in markets around the world where they are growing and investing,” he said.

Leenart said the bank’s China headcount had doubled over the past eight years, with business continually expanding. “We’re constantly adding bankers to cover more clients in the mid-cap sector, in the innovation-economy sector, and that is both in Hong Kong and in the Chinese mainland,” he said. “It’s a big part of our Asian business, and it has been growing [annually] at 20 per cent plus for the last few years.”By Frank Tang
