BANGKOK -- Thailand's passenger-car market became increasingly electrified in August, with sales of battery electric vehicles more than doubling and hybrid models posting strong gains, while conventional internal-combustion-engine vehicles lost further ground.
Domestic vehicle sales rose 25.6% from a year earlier to 59,809 units in August, extending gains for a sixth straight month, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). The recovery was driven largely by passenger vehicles. Among passenger vehicles, battery EV sales surged 113.3% to 19,721 units, hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales rose 31.8% to 14,807 units and plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) sales jumped 126.5% to 1,053 units. In contrast, sales of passenger internal-combustion-engine vehicles fell 17% to 7,973 units.
Electrified vehicles, including BEVs, HEVs and PHEVs, accounted for more than 80% of passenger-car sales in August, highlighting a rapid shift away from conventional gasoline-powered models. BEVs alone accounted for nearly one-third of all vehicles sold in Thailand during the month.
Vehicle production also rose 10.9% to 124,646 units, supported by higher output of electric vehicles and automobiles destined for export.
"The market is recovering, but sales remain below pre-pandemic levels, when monthly sales typically reached 70,000 to 80,000 vehicles," Surapong Paisitpattanapong, spokesperson for the FTI's automotive industry division, told Nikkei Asia.
Surapong attributed the growth in EV demand partly to elevated fuel prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East, which has encouraged consumers to consider alternatives to conventional vehicles. The growing availability of competitively priced EVs, particularly from Chinese manufacturers, has also helped boost demand.
Despite the improved headline sales figures, Thailand's automotive industry continues to face challenges from weak purchasing power and tight lending standards. Sales of one-ton pickup trucks, a key segment of Thailand's auto market, fell 10.8% in August to 5,177 units, while sales of double-cab pickup trucks declined 3.6% to 4,910 units.
The sharp rise in EV demand has also highlighted Thailand's reliance on imported vehicles. Domestic production of passenger BEVs totaled 13,126 units in August, well below sales of 19,721 units. For the first eight months of the year, passenger BEV production totaled 60,578 units, compared with sales of 145,132 units. This suggests roughly 58% of the BEVs sold during the period were imported.
"Imported EVs do not create jobs or value in Thailand," Surapong said, calling for a restructuring of excise taxes to create a more level playing field between established automakers and newer EV manufacturers.
The FTI has argued that Thailand's current tax regime disproportionately favors EVs. Locally assembled EVs are subject to a 2% excise tax, while imported EVs face a 10% rate. By comparison, hybrid vehicles are taxed at 6% to 15% and gasoline-powered vehicles at 25% to 35%.
The government has agreed in principle to revise the excise tax structure. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas said the new automotive tax framework would be finalized by the end of September.
