Australia’s trade chief will push for rules that are “open, fair and fit for the future” when he meets counterparts from the world’s top 20 economies in the US this week. The G20 makes up 85 per cent of global GDP and remains an avenue of dialogue for countries with vastly different views.
“Now more than ever, we need to work with our international partners to tackle the shared challenges and opportunities ahead,” Trade Minister Don Farrell said ahead of his departure on Tuesday.
“Our prosperity depends on Australian businesses being able to rely on rules-based trade to compete on a level playing field, reach global markets and remain competitive. “Growing global tensions and protectionism have shaken the foundations of our global trading system, and I will press our partners to agree on practical co-operation to keep trade flowing.” A seat at the $78 trillion table gives Senator Farrell a chance to air Australia’s concerns directly with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, such as July’s effective tariff hike and President Donald Trump’s latest threat to halt diesel exports. The Trump administration imposed a 12.5 per cent tariff on Australian goods after claiming Australia and dozens of other countries were not doing enough to combat modern slavery in their supply chains. “The United States has had a forced (labour) import ban for nearly a century, and rigorously enforces it; it’s well past time for our trading partners to do the same,” Mr Greer said at the time, adding that the “action will begin to correct what is both a human rights abuse and distortive trade practice to improve the welfare of workers everywhere”. The new rate came after the previous 10 per cent levy expired, with the US Supreme Court ruling that sweeping duties imposed internationally in 2025 were illegal. “The Australian government will continue to defend our interests, support our exporters and work for a global trading system that is open, fair and fit for the future,” Senator Farrell said. Senator Farrell is also set to canvas the free trade with the EU, energy security with South Korea, market access for Australian farmers with India and deepening economic ties with Canada amid its spiralling trade war with the US.
