TOKYO -- Japanese trading house Mitsubishi Corp. and partners including Shell will double the production capacity of a major Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, strengthening energy supplies for Asia as the region grapples with disruptions linked to the Iran war.

LNG Canada, which shipped its first cargo in mid-2025 will increase its LNG production capacity to 28 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) from 14 mtpa, Mitsubishi said on Tuesday. Commercial operations at the additional facilities are expected to begin in the early 2030s, it added. The trading house, which holds a 15% stake in the project, will cover 500 billion yen ($3.2 billion) in total project costs, of which 350 billion yen is for construction.

The expansion will transform LNG Canada into one of the world's largest LNG export facilities, providing Asian importers with an additional source of supply at a time of heightened concern over the reliability of global energy flows.

Unlike LNG projects in many other exporting regions, the facility's location on Canada's Pacific coast allows cargoes to reach Asia quickly while avoiding major maritime bottlenecks. Shipments from the coastal town of Kitimat, British Columbia, take about 10 days to reach Japan, compared with roughly 25 days for cargoes from the U.S. Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal and more than 40 days if vessels are forced to sail around southern Africa.

Middle Eastern supplies generally reach Asia in around 20 days, but must transit strategic chokepoints including the Strait of Hormuz and the Strait of Malacca.

The project also offers Asian buyers greater diversification beyond traditional suppliers such as Australia, Qatar, Malaysia and the U.S. Before the Iran war, the Middle East accounted for roughly one-fifth of global LNG supply.

Since operations began, all LNG Canada cargoes have been delivered to Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines, data from consultancy Kpler showed, underscoring the project's growing role in the region's markets. "The project can help supply LNG to customers in Asia at a time when diversity of energy supplies and energy security are increasingly important," said Cederic Cremers, president of Shell's integrated gas business.

Shell owns a 40% stake in the project, while Mitsubishi holds 15%. The remaining shareholders are Asian energy companies, including Malaysia's Petronas, PetroChina and Korea Gas.

The Kitimat facility receives natural gas from inland fields through a 670-kilometer pipeline and liquefies it by cooling the fuel to below minus 160 degrees Celsius.

Shell expects global LNG demand to surge to between 650 million mtpa and 710 mtpa by 2040, up 54% to 68% from 2025 levels, spurred by rising demand in Asian countries.
