By Daniel Basteiro Spain’s contender to succeed European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde next year is set to get serious backing from other euro-area countries, according to Governor José Luis Escrivá.

“It is very good news for Spain that, for the first time, we have a candidate who, as can be seen, is among those being proposed by the heads of government,” Escrivá said in Madrid on Tuesday.

Acknowledging that Bank for International Settlements chief Pablo Hernandez de Cos “is not the only” contender for the job, he stressed that his predecessor as Bank of Spain head “has considerable support.”
