Five public universities in Hong Kong have ranked in the top 100 of a renowned British publication’s latest global league table, as part of a trend described as a “historic realignment” of academic prowess from West to East.

The University of Hong Kong remained the city’s highest-ranked tertiary institution, holding onto 33rd place from the previous year, in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, released on Wednesday.
香港中文大学（中大）排名第42位，较去年的第41位下滑一位；香港科技大学则维持在第58位。
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) ranked 42nd, down from 41 a year ago, while the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology maintained its position at 58.
中大表示，该校在五项核心表现指标——研究卓越性、专利、科研及机构收入、研究生产力、以及国际员工比例——上均取得满分，同时在教学声誉、师生比例和国际学生比例方面取得显著进步。
CUHK said it achieved full marks across five core performance metrics – research excellence; patents; research and institutional income; research productivity; and the proportion of international staff – while making notable gains in teaching reputation, student-staff ratio and the proportion of international students.
校方表示：“这些结果反映了大学在教学质量、研究能力和国际视野方面的持续优势。”
“These results reflect the university’s sustained strength in teaching quality, research capability and global outlook,” it said.

Meanwhile, City University climbed three spots to 70, its highest position yet, while Polytechnic University advanced one position to 79.
香港浸会大学排名第205位，而去年位列201-250名区间。
Baptist University ranked 205th, compared with last year’s spot in the 201–250 band.
岭南大学在上一届排名中首次上榜，此次升至第257位，较以往的301-350名区间有所上升。
Lingnan University, which made its debut in the previous rankings, reached 257th in the latest showing, up from its past place in the 301–350 band.

The latest rankings cover a record 2,297 institutions across 118 countries and territories, an increase of 106, respectively, compared with the previous year.
据THE称，排名基于对约2,000万篇研究论文的分析、约100万份学术声誉调查投票，以及来自全球3,000多所大学的“详细机构数据”编制而成。
According to THE, the rankings were built on an analysis of about 20 million research papers, around 1 million votes from an academic reputation survey and “detailed institutional data” from more than 3,000 universities worldwide.

The 17 performance metrics were grouped into five categories: teaching; research environment; research quality; industry; and international outlook.

He also said the latest rankings had the lowest number of American institutions in the top 200.
