Hong Kong has seen strong growth in private wealth assets, but the industry has not yet seen the same scale of hiring, as private banks and wealth management companies have adopted technology including AI to serve customers, according to consulting firm Capco.
“When assets under management by private banks are growing rapidly, the relationship managers are not increasing at the same rate as the use of technology and AI are enhancing the productivity of the team,” Simon Smallcombe, Capco’s insurance and wealth leader in the Asia-Pacific region, said in an interview on Monday.
Financial firms in Hong Kong managed HK$42.2 trillion (US$5.38 trillion) worth of assets last year, up 20 per cent year on year, according to the Securities and Futures Commission, with a 24 per cent increase in private bank and family office assets – to HK$12.9 trillion – driving the growth.
However, Smallcombe said that Capco research based on commission data had found that headcount in the private bank industry had risen just 2.2 per cent – from 9,920 in 2024 to 10,140 last year. A report detailing the firm’s findings will be released on Wednesday.
Many private banks and wealth management companies had adopted artificial intelligence and other technology tools in recent years, allowing bankers to spend less time on administrative work, Smallcombe said.
When they need to have succession planning or sophisticated investment decisions, they would talk to someone they can trust Simon Smallcombe, Capco He said the trend would continue, allowing private banks and wealth management companies to support rising assets without the need to increase the size of their workforces.
However, Smallcombe added, AI would not replace humans in the industry.
“The clients may search simple information via AI, but when they need to have succession planning or sophisticated investment decisions, they would talk to someone they can trust,” he said.
Bankers employed at private banks did not need to worry about competition with AI, but should embrace AI to do their jobs, Smallcombe said.
“The role of the relationship managers at private banks will change as technology will allow them to have greater capacity,” he said. “When AI and technology help to remove the burden of administration from the relationship managers, they can have more time to spend with the customers.”He also said clients wanted to see their relationship managers use AI to quickly provide them with more information.
“Customers’ expectations are elevated because they can order something online and the goods could be delivered the next day,” Smallcombe said. “They can order food, and that can be delivered instantly. Their expectation of speed has escalated.”That meant bankers also needed to use technology to provide high-quality services that helped clients make quick investment decisions, and to deliver unimpeded processing.
“The combination of technology and humans would be a powerful blend to enable relationship managers not only to sell products, but also to offer comprehensive financial advisory services to customers,” he said. “The role of relationship managers in the era of technology could actually be expanded to other areas such as succession planning.”Smallcombe noted that HSBC had announced a plan to hire more relationship managers in Singapore while at the same time investing more in AI.
