Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews protested in West Jerusalem on Tuesday against compulsory military service, Israeli media reported.

Israel’s Channel 12 said the rally was held in honor of draft evaders recently released from military prison. The march began in the Geula neighborhood, forcing the closure of several streets, the channel said. It added that draft evaders were expected to receive hundreds of shekels each at the end of the rally.

Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth daily said the recently released men arrived by bus and were greeted enthusiastically by protesters.

Demonstrators carried signs saying “Release the hostages from Prison 10. They will never serve in the enemy army,” while others held placards saying “We will die rather than enlist.”The dispute over military service has intensified since Israel’s Supreme Court ruled in June 2024 that ultra-Orthodox Jewish men are subject to compulsory military service and ordered the suspension of state funding for religious institutions whose students refuse to enlist.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews account for around 14% of Israel’s population of more than 10 million. Most oppose compulsory military service, arguing that full-time Torah study should take precedence and that military service threatens their religious way of life.
