By William Horobin French inflation accelerated to the fastest pace in more than two years, maintaining pressure on the European Central Bank to continue raising interest rates.

Inflation in the euro area’s second-biggest economy stood at 3.4% in September, up from 2.6% in August, statistics agency Insee said Wednesday. That’s more than the 3.2% estimated in a Bloomberg survey of analysts.

Surging oil and natural gas costs triggered by the seven-month conflict in the Middle East are still feeding into Europe’s economy, prompting the ECB to tighten monetary policy and governments to help firms and households that face rising energy bills.

Spain reported the steepest price gains in more than three years on Tuesday with a reading of 5% that’s more than double the ECB’s 2% target. Italian and German data, due later Wednesday, are expected to reveal rates exceeding 3%. Import prices for the latter recorded their largest advance in almost four years in August.

Eurostat will release inflation figures on Friday for the 21-nation euro zone as a whole. Economists estimate it reached a three-year high of 3.7%.

The ECB has raised borrowing costs twice so far, to 2.5%, and markets are pricing almost four more quarter-point increases over the next year. President Christine Lagarde on Monday backed a “measured response as appropriate to keep inflation in check.”The global bond selloff will curb prices and growth, though, she cautioned.

France’s data showed most of the pressure still comes from energy costs, which rose 21.2% from a year ago in September. That chimes with ECB policymakers who say second-round effects are yet to show up.

Still, inflation in France’s services sector quickened to 2.2% from 1.9%, while for food it picked up to 1.5% from 1.1% as fresh produce costs jumped.

France has seen slower price rises than its peers in Europe, partly due to nuclear power supplying a large share of its energy and an economy that’s been dragged down by heat waves and uncertainty over politics and the budget.

A separate report Wednesday from Insee showed consumer spending dropped 0.5% from the previous month in August as food and energy outlays declined. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had expected stagnation.
