By Azman Usmani and Baiju Kalesh Actis LLP is planning to invest about $2 billion into a new renewable energy business in India, according to people familiar with the matter, as the investment firm seeks to tap surging power demand in Asia’s third-largest economy.
The new investment will be Actis’ fourth clean energy platform in India, extending a playbook centered on building gigawatt-scale portfolios for strategic exits, according to Abhishek Bansal, a managing director for energy infrastructure at Actis. He declined to comment on the size of the investment.
“Our strategy in India involves building assets from zero or a small base and scale them into businesses with strong cashflows, strong management and a growth pipeline,” Bansal said.
The new capital outlay will help fund the new business, named Leo Energies, as it acquires and builds out more than 3 gigawatts of solar, wind and battery energy storage assets, Bansal added.
Actis previously built and sold Ostro Energy to ReNew Power for about $1.55 billion in 2018 and Sprng Energy to Shell Plc for $1.55 billion in 2022, and is currently preparing an exit for its third renewable platform, BluPine Energy, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private.
The move underscores how global private equity and infrastructure funds continue to double down on India’s renewable ecosystem.
