Starbucks announced last week that it would close approximately 250 coffeehouses across North America, representing just under 1% of its more than 18,000 locations in the region. In a memo to employees, chief operating officer Mike Grams said Starbucks had identified stores where it could not consistently provide its desired customer and employee experience or see a path to acceptable financial performance. The company said affected employees would be offered transfers where possible, while those it could not place elsewhere would receive severance.

Winter said he compiled the list using store schedules on Starbucks’ website and calls to affected stores. Business Insider then verified each location using Starbucks’ online store locator and Google Maps. We classified a store as closed only if it no longer appeared in Starbucks’ locator and Google Maps marked it as permanently closed. Using this method, we mapped 239 store closures.
