By Kelcee Griffis Consumers are increasingly focused on price over speeds when choosing home internet service, according to new research from Bloomberg Intelligence, and cable companies are most likely to feel the squeeze from the shifting customer preferences.

Roughly a third of internet customers surveyed said they are looking to change providers, with nearly half of that group seeking better deals, according to the findings of a poll of 1,000 US residents in early September. Among those who are a flight risk, 27% said they are seeking a lower monthly bill, while 13% want better value and 8% are ready for a change, following a price increase or expired promotion.

That’s in contrast to the only 10% of potential switchers seeking faster speeds, Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Geetha Ranganathan and John Butler wrote in their report.

“With consumers increasingly treating broadband as a value purchase, cable may have to compete more heavily on price and packaging rather than simply speed, putting its traditional average revenue per user-led growth model under pressure,” they said. Cable companies like Charter Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp. have been feeling pressure from fixed-wireless plans offered by major mobile providers, which make use of excess spectrum capacity to provide wireless home internet at low prices. All three major mobile companies are also investing in expanded fiber networks and offering packages of mobile an internet service to consumers. Those investments are making an impression on consumers.

Of the potential switchers surveyed, 49% said they’d consider buying fixed wireless access and 47% would consider buying fiber, compared with the 23% of respondents who would consider a cable service. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon were the top-of-mind providers for potential customers, well above Comcast’s Xfinity brand and Charter’s Spectrum brand.

SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, poses a competitive threat to both the cable and wireless providers, which could intensify if Starlink launches a mobile phone service in the US. More than half of people surveyed—61%—said they’d consider subscribing to a hypothetical Starlink wireless service, even though many would insist on getting a discount.
