Romania's Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Muresan lost a confidence vote in parliament on Wednesday, according to broadcaster Digi24.

The Muresan government failed to secure the 233 votes needed to win a confidence vote, receiving 182 votes in favor and 15 against.

Following the vote, the conditions provided by the Constitution for dissolving parliament and calling for early elections were met, giving President Nicusor Dan the right to do so. Dan, however, reportedly stressed on several occasions that he did not want to dissolve parliament. Dan had signed a decree on Sept. 17 formally designating Muresan as a candidate for prime minister.

Both AUR and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) had announced that they would not vote for the inauguration of the Muresan government.
