SEATTLE, Washington -- U.S. airlines are expanding flights to Japan, with some adding more direct trips and cabin upgrades to capture growing demand for travel to the country stemming from the weak yen.

"Japan is hot, hot, hot for demand now," United CEO Scott Kirby said in August, calling the country one of the most popular destinations for travelers from the U.S.

Alaska Airlines in October begins cabin upgrades for flights to Japan and plans to add more private seats for business class, the company said Tuesday. The airline, based in the Seattle area, mainly serves the U.S. West Coast and works with Japan Airlines (JAL) as part of the onewo.

Alaska acquired Hawaiian Airlines in 2024 and has been adding new international long-haul flights since, including one linking Seattle and the Tokyo area's Narita Airport that started in May 2025 using Hawaiian's aircraft. By March, the route was profitable, with a load factor -- a measure of how full planes are with paying passengers -- of over 90%. Alaska will take over operation of the flight, relaunching it with new Boeing-made midsize 787-9 aircraft outfitted with new seats in a bid to win more Japan-bound passengers.

Alaska also looks to introduce "premium reserve" in 2028, an economy class option that comes with more services for a higher price. The airline aims to increase the proportion of premium seats to 46%, including business and premium economy, from 38% now.

Customers want more premium services, Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci said at an event Tuesday where he announced the company's strategy on premium flights. The airline will add more destinations with a focus on Asia, chief commercial officer Andrew Harrison said. Bigger U.S. airlines intend to add more Japan flights in March 2027.

American Airlines, which partners with JAL, will launch a route between Chicago and Narita. Delta Air Lines plans to reopen its Seattle-Narita route that month.

United Airlines, which partners with All Nippon Airways (ANA), will add direct flights to Japanese cities other than Tokyo, including airports serving Osaka, Okinawa and Sapporo, located on the northernmost main island of Hokkaido.

In August, visitors to Japan from the U.S. set a record for the month, rising 1.5% year-on-year to 197,400, the Japan National Tourism Organization reports.

Stock market gains are fueling a greater U.S. appetite for middle- and upper-class spending. More travelers are choosing Japan as the weak yen makes travel there feel like a bargain.

Meanwhile, Japan's major airlines that work with their big U.S. counterparts also are renewing their premium seat offerings to attract customers at higher ticket prices. JAL now uses Airbus-made A350-1000 aircraft for flights between Tokyo and cities like New York, Washington and Los Angeles, and it expanded private seating for first and business class. ANA also plans to begin using Boeing 787-9 planes with more private business class seating in November, which it may deploy for North American flights as well.
