President Trump's daughter-in-law Lara Trump on Tuesday said the Iran war could cost him the midterm elections but insisted that losing both chambers of Congress would be worth the cost.
British journalist Harry Cole spoke with Lara Trump, also a former Republican National Committee co-chair, on his YouTube show "Harry Cole Saves the West."
He asked about her outlook on the midterms while the Iranians are "dragging their feet on doing any form of deal." Cole said the conflict "could cost [Trump] his legacy." "Well, it could cost him these midterms," she replied.
"I think Donald Trump's legacy has yet to be written and I think that, in a lot of ways, maybe –– I still say he's going to go down in history as one of the greatest presidents –– if not, the greatest America has ever seen."
She later said the president "really hates the way that things have gone with Iran" and wished that "things had more swiftly happened."
"But you're right, the Iranians are absolutely holding out until these midterm elections," Lara Trump continued.
"They want to do everything they can to damage this president's hopes of these midterms going his way because they think it's going to give them an advantage."
These comments are at odds with what Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told reporters at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly last week.
“We don’t want it to get to the midterm elections,” Pezeshkian said, responding to President Trump's earlier claim that the regime is waiting until after Americans hit the polls to settle the conflict.
Cole later pressed Lara Trump on the administration's case for the war and whether it would be worth losing both chambers in November to the Democrats. "Yeah," she answered.
"Look, I think he just understands that when Iran gets a nuclear weapon, it doesn't matter who is in charge of the House. It doesn't matter the majority in the Senate.
This world is a really frightening place and you really can't come back from that."
She defended the president's accomplishments in the Middle East despite dealing with the "lunatics" in Iran.
Cole said he views the conflict as one that the administration has not made a "complete case for," and asked if enough has been done to explain to Americans why the conflict is happening as gas prices soar.
Lara Trump said Americans feel "far removed" from Iran geographically and that her father-in-law "talks about it a lot."
"But I think it would be beneficial to hear from other Republicans, from other folks at the White House, from other people out there in this space, more about exactly what was on the line and how close I think we were to the world being a very different and very scary place if Iran ever actually developed a nuclear weapon," she said.
The U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran reached the seven-month mark on Monday, a military operation that the president said would be an "excursion" that would conclude on a short timeline.
Republican lawmakers have largely supported his decision to launch strikes, but some with their eyes toward winning races in November have called for a quick end to the conflict to allow gas prices to moderate.
Iran shut down the strait after the initial strikes in February, effectively cutting off roughly 20 percent of the world's oil from being exported globally through the strait.
He has defended the higher prices as a "very inexpensive price to pay" to stop Iran's nuclear ambitions.
