Russia summoned Denmark’s ambassador to Moscow on Wednesday because of an incident earlier this month in which a Russian frigate allegedly fired flares at a Danish military helicopter in the Baltic Sea.

The Foreign Ministry said that it lodged a protest with the ambassador regarding the “unprofessional and provocative” actions of the Danish helicopter directed at the Soobrazitelny corvette of Russia’s Baltic Fleet, which it said took place earlier in neutral waters in the southwestern Baltic Sea.

The corresponding statement said the helicopter made a “dangerous” approach toward the corvette, "threatening navigational safety" among others, and that all warnings transmitted regarding the helicopter's altitude were ignored. “To draw attention, two signal flares were fired from the corvette in a direction away from the helicopter. The aircraft subsequently ceased its provocative actions and departed the area. These facts are confirmed by objective monitoring data and are indisputable,” said the statement.
俄罗斯方面还强调，这种行为严重违反了《联合国海洋法公约》。声明中特别指出，丹麦方面对俄罗斯的指控毫无根据，是荒谬且不可接受的。
It also said the ambassador was informed that Moscow viewed the maneuvers by the helicopter as a “gross violation” of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. “Emphasis was placed on the unacceptability and absurdity of the accusations leveled against Russia by the Danish authorities regarding the incident – accusations that are entirely baseless,” it said.

On Sept. 15, the Danish Defense Ministry said that a Fennec helicopter belonging to the Air Force was fired at with flares "in connection with routine photo coverage of a Russian frigate, which was in international waters off Gedser," a coastal town on the island of Falster.

The ministry said the Russian frigate fired two flares at the helicopter during the incident on Sept. 14, with one passing "within a short distance" of the aircraft.

Meanwhile, Denmark also summoned Russia's ambassador in the country over the incident, who later told Russian media that Moscow would thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a later statement on Sept. 16, the Russian Defense Ministry said the incident occurred as the corvette operated in international waters in the southwestern Baltic Sea, and that its crew detected the helicopter as it approached the vessel and “failed to respond to calls" made via an international communication channel. "The corvette's commander made the decision to fire two red signal flares to prevent a provocation by the Danish helicopter, after which the helicopter left the area," it added.
