By Patricia Garip and Fabiola Zerpa GeoPark Ltd., an oil producer backed by Colombia’s richest family, is in talks with Venezuela’s state energy company for supplies of a light petroleum product used to thin heavy crude.

The Bogota-based company is negotiating this week with Petroleos de Venezuela SA for shipments of the product, called diluent, as it prepares to start production in the nation’s Orinoco Belt, GeoPark Chief Executive Officer Felipe Bayón said in an interview at an oil and gas conference in Caracas.

Access to diluent is crucial to producing crude in the Orinoco Belt, where the oil is too heavy to flow through pipelines without being blended with a thinner. Other companies setting up operations in the region as part of the US-led effort to revive production will be watching closely as GeoPark negotiates for supplies from PDVSA. “For extra-heavy crudes, diluent is absolutely fundamental,” Bayón said.

The most commonly used diluent in Venezuela is a light variety of oil produced by PDVSA. A more costly option is imported naphtha, a liquid petroleum product.

GeoPark signed a 25-year contract in September to operate an area of the Orinoco called the Bare block. The company has up to 120 days to hammer out details before taking over the field.

Colombia’s Gilinski family, which has interests in banking, real estate and manufacturing, announced a plan recently to increase its stake in GeoPark and eventually control the company. GeoPark currently has 28 people in Venezuela and plans to ramp up production at Bare by about ninefold to around 90,000 barrels a day.
