President Trump wrote on Wednesday that he asked the U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche to “study” the office of Inspector General’s (IG) report that cleared former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell of criminal wrongdoing related to the central bank’s renovations.

“I have asked Attorney General Todd Blanche to study the report, and make a determination as to what to do about a relatively small Building Complex that is Hundreds of Millions of Dollars over budget, and is now going to cost, according to the Report, at least 2.5 Billion Dollars, with no end in sight,” Trump wrote.
IG报告发现，鲍威尔和其他联储官员在处理中央银行持续的数百万美元装修项目时并未违反刑法，但承认中央银行“未能有效执行”装修的建筑管理风险合同。
The IG report found Powell and other Fed officials did not violate criminal law during their handling of the central bank’s ongoing multimillion-dollar renovation project but it did acknowledge the central bank “has not effectively executed” the construction management risk contract for the renovations.

In one instance, the Fed’s Board of Governors initially approved a budget of $1.317 billion for one of the two renovation projects in February 2020, which ballooned to $2.381 billion in December 2024, according to the report.

The Fed said that changes to the original building designs made after consultation with federal and D.C. review agencies along with rising costs of materials, equipment and labor resulted in the higher price tag.

Trump criticized Fed officials for failing to set to “obtain a project cost estimate” from the construction manager until January 2026, which Trump noted was “3.5 years after construction began and after the Board had awarded more than $2 billion in construction costs.”

“I could have done a far better Renovation for 25 Million Dollars, completely maintaining the MAGNIFICENCE of the structure, and had money left over,” he continued. “This is Jerome Powell’s fault, and he should be forced to resign, IMMEDIATELY!”

The report was a part of a probe into Powell’s handling of the project in April, at the recommendation of U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro — who oversaw her own three-month investigation into the former Fed chair.

Powell accused Pirro’s office of launching the probe in an attempt to pressure him to lower interest rates – an issue he has clashed with Trump on.
