President Trump said during a Hispanic Heritage Month event on Wednesday that only Hispanics could survive a fall from the site of the White House ballroom.

The president made the remark in the East Room after inviting the event’s attendees to step onto the floor of the new ballroom outside.

“There’s a tunnel going to what I think will be the greatest ballroom ever built. It’s also a tremendous military complex with a drone port on top,” Trump said.

“You literally will be the first group ever to enter the premises. So be very careful. Don’t fall over the edge, because it’s a long way down,” he continued.

“And only a Hispanic could survive that fall,” the president added, receiving cheers from attendees. “So, I’m not overly worried.”Wednesday’s White House Hispanic Heritage Month event is the first of the second Trump administration. The White House did not hold an event honoring the month last year, but the president did sign a proclamation celebrating it.

Trump’s remarks to attendees on Wednesday lasted nearly an hour and also featured Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the highest-ranking Hispanic official in the U.S.

The event comes as polling shows Republicans struggling with the Hispanic voting bloc, which boosted Trump during the 2024 presidential election.
