By Andrew Atkinson and Claire Jiao Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey warned that the UK needs to be prepared for financial market shocks triggered by a potential correction after the artificial intelligence boom.

The central bank has been watching “very carefully” as money poured into AI and sent asset prices soaring, Bailey told the BBC in an interview broadcast Thursday. “Everybody is currently priced to be a winner,” he said. “You look back at the past, not everybody is a winner.”The BOE is ready to deal with market shocks and will ensure that the financial system is resilient, the governor said.

His comments come amid heated global debate over the sustainability of the AI boom. Trillions of dollars of new wealth has been built on the assumption that the technology will keep growing at breakneck speed. But stiff competition among AI firms, higher borrowing costs and growing public pushback against data centers have raised concerns.

There are also mounting calls to slow down the development of cutting-edge AI after a series of high-profile security breaches, including disclosures by OpenAI last week that its models had hacked an Australian government website. Such incidents have stoked fears about AI breaking free of human control, and caused US lawmakers and tech leaders to demand new standards.

In its twice-yearly systemic risk survey published on Wednesday, the BOE said a record number of participants cited risks around AI. Bailey told the BBC that the technology has become a potent way of uncovering vulnerabilities. “In the wrong hands,” he said, it’s potentially a “very powerful weapon.”Anthropic PBC Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei has promised to slow development of the most advanced models, a pledge embraced by peers like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk.

President Donald Trump, on the other hand, has belittled doomsday fears as “a hoax” and rejected calls for more international coordination on AI as “a globalist conspiracy.”Amodei and Trump met for dinner on Sunday night.
