BANGKOK -- German chipmaker Infineon Technologies has opened its first Thai plant as the Southeast Asian country ramps up its ambition to become a regional semiconductor hub.

The factory, located in an industrial park east of Bangkok and near the country's main gateway, Suvarnabhumi Airport, mainly focuses on back-end semiconductor production, including power modules and conventional and advanced assembly, packaging and testing. Products will be used for electric vehicles, energy storage systems and data centers in the country -- sectors Thailand is also keen to develop.

Infineon has invested $1.4 billion in the new factory, which is located on a 200,000-square-meter site and would employ up to 5,000 people at full operation.

The company plans to partner with other semiconductor industry players in Thailand to develop stronger supply chains for producing high-value chips in the future. In addition, the company will also cooperate with major Thai universities to develop engineers to meet rising demand.

"Infineon not only invests in Thailand, but also brings global expertise to our country," Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said during the plant's opening ceremony on Thursday.

Infineon's chief operations officer, Alexander Gorski, said the company chose Thailand because it is the heart of Southeast Asia, is surrounded by a fast-growing ecosystem and has access to global logistics.

"We have built the Bangkok site with the future in mind," Gorski said. "This strategic location helps us further diversify our manufacturing network across regions and serve our customers with great flexibility." The factory opening comes as Southeast Asian countries attract chip investments amid the global artificial intelligence boom. The robust chip industry has also pushed up overall economic growth in countries like Malaysia and Singapore.

In Singapore this week, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) affiliate Vanguard International Semiconductor inaugurated its first advanced chipmaking plant, while U.S. chipmaker Broadcom and Japan's Toppan Holdings opened the city-state's first advanced chip substrate plant.

Infineon Technologies' first plant in Thailand, located in the Bangpli Noi district near Bangkok. (Infineon) Although Thailand is a regional automotive hub, it lags behind Singapore and Malaysia in the semiconductor industry. The Thai government has therefore launched an ambitious plan to develop the sector, aiming to attract $80 billion in new investment by 2050 The government also targets creating more than 230,000 jobs under the initiative. The road map is in three phases.

到 2030 年,泰国将巩固其现有的组装和测试能力,提升先进的封装技术,并为前端晶圆生产奠定基础;

到 2040 年,泰国将寻求更多上游产业(如芯片设计、晶圆制造和先进技术制造)的投资,以填补供应链中的空白;

By 2030, Thailand will reinforce its established assembly and testing base, scale advanced packaging capabilities and lay the foundation for front-end wafer production By 2040, the country will seek more anchor investors in upstream activities, including chip design, wafer fabrication and advanced-technology manufacturing to fill gaps in the supply chain.

By 2050, Thailand aims to have a complete domestic supply chain. According to the Board of Investment, Thailand received investment promotion applications for 879 semiconductor and advanced electronic projects worth about $27.2 billion between 2023 and the first half of 2026, spanning printed circuit boards, hard-disk drives, AI servers and electronic parts for vehicles.
