The recent cut in edible oil import duties has started reviving demand ahead of the festive season, with consumer prices also falling, according to Sudhakar Desai, CEO of Emami Agrotech.“The demand is definitely picking up after the duty certainty has come about action by the government,” Desai said, adding that goods are now moving from ports into distribution channels that had remained dry in anticipation of the duty decision. Desai said the duty cut has also helped bring down international and domestic edible oil prices.

He noted that the government's decision to reduce the duty on sunflower oil by 10% has acted as a barrier to further price increases, keeping soybean and palm oil prices in check. Consumer prices have already started falling, although the impact on packaged products typically takes around 15 days because of existing pipeline inventory. Loose oil sold to hotels, restaurants and institutions saw an immediate price reduction, while branded oil prices have also come down as sellers compete for market share. The lower prices could also help revive consumption over the next few months.

Desai said edible oil consumption, which normally grows by 3-4% in India, increased by only around 1-1.5% this year as higher prices hurt demand.“Now that the prices are stabilising in the next three four months, I think we can look at increased consumption,” he said. The expected improvement is not limited to edible oils. Desai said higher prices had also affected the food service sector, including biscuits, snacks and sweetmeat products. With prices stabilising, he expects the broader food sector to see better demand over the next three to four months. Meanwhile, Emami Agrotech is expanding its portfolio beyond edible oils by using its existing distribution network.
