By Alicia Diaz, Annmarie Hordern, Jonathan Ferro and Lisa Abramowicz President Donald Trump’s top trade adviser is pressing European allies to release some diesel reserves, amid a surge in the fuel’s price, saying he had discussed the matter with his French counterpart and would raise it with other nations at a Group of 20 meeting.
“I spoke with my French counterpart yesterday. Very good conversation,” US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told Bloomberg Television on Thursday in Milwaukee, where he’s hosting counterparts from G20 economies. “I let him know that this is an idea that that we’ve had in the US. We’d love to have a collaborative response to this.”“I’ll meet with my European Union officials and counterparts today, and I’ll carry the same message,” he added.
Diesel prices have seen a record surge, posing a political challenge for Trump ahead of November midterm elections in which his party’s control of Congress is at risk. The election is poised to hinge on voters’ concerns over high costs of living, including for energy. The administration has been weighing a number of options to help bring down diesel prices, including a potential US export ban of the fuel.
That idea has alarmed oil industry executives, who mounted a lobbying campaign warning that any export ban could have unintended consequences such as raising prices for other fuels. Trump signaled Wednesday, however, that his appetite to ban exports of US diesel has cooled given the risk of unintended price spikes.
White House officials are mulling other options that would fall well short of a ban, including encouraging leaders of some European nations that rely heavily on US diesel to release some of their inventories, people familiar with the matter said, speaking anonymously to discuss internal deliberations.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Wednesday also signaled possible relief from Europe, saying that “there would be “announcements from our friends in Europe about new diesel supplies that’ll come to the market.” The European Union is also coordinating a joint position with member states on emergency diesel stocks in response to the US request. The EU’s Oil Coordination Group asked member countries late Wednesday to confirm whether they have been contacted by the US after one nation said it had been approached bilaterally, according to a memo seen by Bloomberg News.
Reuters earlier reported that the Trump administration told Germany and France to unlock their emergency diesel inventories to help ease global fuel prices or possibly face a US diesel export ban, citing people close to the discussions.
