The UN human rights office on Thursday cited the case of Tennessee inmate Christa Pike as a reason to abolish the death penalty after Pike survived two attempts to administer lethal injection drugs.
The case "lays bare multiple reasons why the death penalty should be abolished," the office said in a post on the US social media company "The prolonged suffering – physical and mental – arising from multiple failed execution attempts is abhorrent and cruel," it stressed, adding that there are "key fair trial questions" still unresolved.
In the post, the office said UN human rights chief Volker Turk had called on state authorities not to pursue further attempts to execute the inmate, who was convicted and sentenced to capital punishment in 1996 for the 1995 slaying of Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville.
"We are also troubled by the increase in the number of executions in the United States," the office said. "The death penalty has no place in any society." Pike, the only woman on Tennessee's death row, remained alive after two syringes of lethal injection drugs were administered to her late Wednesday, her lawyers said in a federal court filing seeking to halt the execution, NBC News reported.
The lawyers said that at 8.26 pm local time (0126GMT) Thursday, Pike was "still alive and snoring," and that she had not lost consciousness and still had a heartbeat.
An ambulance was seen arriving at the prison and later leaving, and federal court records showed that medical aid was being administered, though Pike's condition was unclear.
Following the botched procedure, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee called for a "comprehensive, third-party review" of the execution and announced a halt to all capital punishment in the state through the remainder of the year, suspending an execution scheduled for Dec. 3 for another inmate, The Tennessean newspaper reported.
The Tennessee Department of Correction defended its actions during the lethal injection, with department spokesperson Dorinda Carter saying officials "followed every step" of the state’s established execution protocol.
The execution process began after the US Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Tennessee to proceed with Pike’s execution, lifting an eleventh-hour order from a federal appeals court that had halted the lethal injection, according to media reports.
The Supreme Court’s decision cleared the way for Tennessee’s first execution of a woman in more than 200 years. The ruling came over the dissent of three liberal justices.
