By Arne Delfs Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the far-right Alternative for Germany is backed by Russia, stepping up his rhetoric against the ascendant opposition party that won two regional elections last month and leads in all major national polls. Merz, who didn’t cite specific evidence of Moscow’s alleged support, made the comment during a speech Thursday that portrayed Russia as a destabilizing force in Germany and a threat to democracy in Europe’s biggest economy.
“We will not let ourselves be divided — not by hybrid attacks, not by hate stirred up on social media by Moscow-controlled bots and not by the slogans of the AfD and their Russian backers,” Merz said at an event sponsored by a business group in the western city of Muenster. “The Russian government wants to unsettle us,” Merz said.
“It wants us to slack off in our support for Ukraine. It wants us to stop investing in our deterrence. It’s looking for any chance to divide our society and weaken our country.”
Alternative for Germany, or AfD, has called for an end of German military support for Ukraine and a resumption of Russian gas imports. While some AfD politicians have had contacts with pro-Russian networks, there’s no proof that Russia has financed the party or steered its policies.
Merz’s government has blamed Russia for a failed drone attack in August at an airport in Leipzig, a hub for North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s military support for Ukraine. The incident set off a round of diplomatic retaliation with Germany closing the Russian consulate in Bonn, the capital of former West Germany during the Cold War, and a Russian cultural center in Berlin.
Russia responded by announcing the closing of branches of Germany’s Goethe Institute cultural and language center. European NATO members are under pressure to boost defense spending and expand their armed forces as US President Donald Trump has pushed allies to do more to protect their territory. He also invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December.
Western officials have warned of the Kremlin’s increasingly brazen campaign of so-called hybrid warfare in the region — assassinations, industrial sabotage and other deniable tactics — aimed at eroding European support for Ukraine. Russia denies it’s conducting such operations.
Merz spoke in honor of this year’s International Peace of Westphalia Prize, which was awarded to NATO. The 1648 treaties, one of which was signed at Muenster, ended the Thirty Years’ War in Europe and are seen as a milestone toward building modern states that respect each other’s territorial sovereignty.
