By Will Guisbond Boeing Co.’s unionized white-collar workers voted to ratify a new contract, averting a costly strike that could have added certification delays to the planemaker’s latest models.
A majority of the SPEEA union, which represents engineers, scientists, technicians and pilots, voted to accept the negotiated proposal, the union said in a statement. A previous version of Boeing’s offer was overwhelmingly voted down in August.
Boeing Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg warned last month that a strike by SPEEA-represented employees would have effectively stalled certification of the company’s already delayed 777-9 and could significantly hamper the planemaker’s 737 production capacity.
Ortberg said that testing for the 777-9 “may” slip into 2027 anyway, though the company still expect some deliveries of the widebody jet next year.
Boeing is also in the final stages of bringing its recently-approved 737 Max 7 and yet-to-be-certified Max 10 narrowbody aircraft to market, the latter of which the US Federal Aviation Administration said would be delayed as it investigates a new software issue. Together with the 777-9, these jets are critical for Boeing to generate cash, repair its balance sheet and pare down debt.
SPEEA-represented workers will see an average pay increase of 32% over four years under the latest proposed contract, up about 5% from the rejected offer, in addition to an immediate 10% pay raise. The proposal also adds a requirement for Boeing leadership to give semiannual reports to union leaders on workforce trends.
A work stoppage would have been Boeing’s third labor disruption in three years. Last year, a strike by machinists in St. Louis disrupted production of Boeing military aircraft and became the planemaker’s longest stoppage since 1948. In 2024, another strike in the Seattle area halted production of all 737, 767 and 777 aircraft for over 50 days. SPEEA members have only ever gone on strike once, in 2000, which became the longest white-collar work-stoppage in US history, according to the union.
