BANGKOK—Locked in an office at a police station in Yangon, the economic capital of war-torn Myanmar, Adam Castillo realized he wasn’t entirely out of luck. His Apple Watch was still linked to his iPhone, which hours earlier had been confiscated by the officers now sleeping next door.
“DETAINED AT MYANMAR AIRPORT,” Castillo, a retired Marine who calls himself “MAGA to the bone,” tapped out to a friend in Washington on the miniature screen at 4:51 a.m. on June 12. “No charge. No arrest. Denying my lawyer.”Castillo, a 40-year-old Californian businessman, would eventually end up in a notorious Myanmar prison—under a military regime that the U.S. doesn’t recognize—because of a dispute with the local chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce.
Last month, an American diplomatic team that U.S. officials said was authorized by President Trump and backed by Vice President JD Vance arrived in Myanmar on a chartered jet and secured Castillo’s release, three months after he was detained.
