China’s EV charging volume on its highways hit a new high on the first day of the seven-day National Day holiday, as the country’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle fleet drives up demand for charging infrastructure.

Single-day charging volume reached 28 million kWh, a 60.4 per cent increase compared with the first day of last year’s National Day holiday, marking the highest one day level during a national holiday period, according to a statement issued by the National Energy Administration on Friday.

The average daily EV travel volume during this year’s National Day holiday could reach 1.6 times the usual level – around 9.8 million trips on a normal day – as road travel was expected to account for more than 90 per cent of all trips during the holiday, transport officials said at a press conference last week.

There were around 49 million EVs on roads in China as of the end of June, accounting for 13.19 per cent of all vehicles, up 2.92 percentage points year on year, according to official data.

As China’s EV fleet has expanded rapidly in recent years, a shortage of charging facilities has remained a challenge, especially during national holidays when peak travel adds additional pressure on the charging infrastructure.

Beijing has been working to ease the shortage. In the first eight months of this year, China added 11,000 high-power charging guns for EVs on highways, a figure equivalent to the total added in all previous years combined, according to transport officials at last week’s press conference.

The country also aimed to double the number of charging stations to more than 40 million by 2030, up from 20 million at the end of 2025, according to a five-year plan for China’s power system released in July. That would be able to meet the charging needs of 110 million electric vehicles.
