President Trump is ramping up pressure on Senate Republicans to move forward with legislation making daylight saving time permanent, blaming Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) for holding up the bipartisan effort to end the twice-a-year changing of clocks.
The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which Trump has dubbed the “No More Changing of Clocks Act,” in July with a 308-117 vote, but the measure has yet to clear the Senate.
“A ridiculous Clock changing process that takes place twice a year, costs our Country a fortune, is bad for Crime, stress on people, Sports, and just about everything else you can imagine,” Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post early Friday.
“People don’t want to go around changing their Clocks anymore and, besides, far and away, most people like having an hour of extra sunlight in the evening, rather than in the morning,” he added.
Trump singled out Cotton, whose reelection bid he endorsed, saying the bill was being “held up” by the Arkansas Republican “for reasons unknown.”The senator has been among the most vocal opponents of permanent daylight-saving time, warning that later winter sunrises would leave children heading to school and millions of Americans traveling to work in the dark.
“If permanent daylight savings time becomes the law of the land, it will again make winter a dark and dismal time for millions of Americans,” he said last year.
Trump argued that more evening daylight would help reduce crime and traffic accidents, while benefiting public health and industries including sports, tourism, restaurants and retail.
“People are sick and tired of having to change their Clocks twice a year. Even most farmers would rather have additional time in the evening to harvest their crops,” Trump wrote, adding that the issue is one Republicans, Democrats and independents can agree on.
He added, “It is foolish, inconvenient and, in some cases, very costly.”Congress moved most of the country to year-round daylight-saving time in early 1974 in response to the energy crisis, records show.
But the experiment quickly ran into opposition as winter sunrises came later and concerns grew over children traveling to school before daylight. Lawmakers ended the experiment that fall.
The Senate unanimously passed a similar bill in 2022, but it stalled in the House.
This time, the lower chamber of Congress has acted while the proposal faces uncertainty in the upper chamber. Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has also cast doubt on whether the measure can secure the 60 votes needed to advance.
